Bella the Highland Cow is nearly ready for Belladrum Festival!
I decided early on to try and make Bella as glitzy as possible, as an outdoor festival is full of visual distractions. For the past week she has been a basic framework, so it was great to get her fully constructed today and now she is starting to come to life.
Here are some snaps showing the build process. I used pipe-lagging to build the main body shapes, which are supported by a cane framework underneath and covered by gold chrome vinyl strips. The puppet is very light, as it is operated by a single performer who straps into the backpack and becomes the hind legs. The front legs and head are rod controlled and the mouth is hinged and weighted to open and close as the head moves.
It is the bounce and swish of the bright, reflective vinyl which really brings Bella to life, I just hope there's some sunshine this weekend! Here's a quick clip of me walking round in circles, testing Bella for the first time.
